With a solar water heating system you’ll be helping to reduce New Zealand’s dependence on non-renewable energy sources as well as saving significant costs on your water heating bill.

Each household solar water heating system is estimated to save between 360  and 1,600 kg of greenhouse gas emissions a year compared to using a standard electric hot water cylinder.
How much money you save from solar water heating will depend on a number of factors. These include how much hot water you use, how well the system is designed  and the quality of the installation.
For an average household an effective solar water heating system will:
  • Cut between 1,800 kWh (kilowatt hours) and 2,700 kWh per year from your electricity usage.
  • Water heating typically makes up 30% of your household energy bill. A well designed and installed solar water heating system will provide 50-75% of your hot water needs.
  • You can use an online calculator to assess your own possible savings.

What does this mean for you?
  • Today you can have an effective and realistically priced means of meeting most or all of your household or commercial energy requirements for water and environmental heating.
  • Whether you are building new or retro-fitting an existing home there is a system to suit.

Installing a good Solar water heating system can:

  • Lower your energy bills.
  • Enhance the value to your home.
  • Help New Zealand preserve its energy resources
  • Help protect the environment.
